If you have shopped for towels recently, you have probably seen “GSM” listed alongside the size and material. It sounds technical, but it is one of the simplest ways to judge towel quality at a glance — once you know what to look for.
What Does GSM Mean?
GSM stands for grams per square metre — essentially, how much a one-metre square piece of the fabric weighs. A higher GSM means a denser, thicker weave, while a lower GSM means a lighter, thinner fabric.
What GSM Range Should You Look For?
- 300–400 GSM: Lightweight and quick-drying, good for gym towels or hot, humid climates.
- 400–600 GSM: A solid everyday range — absorbent, reasonably quick-drying, and good value.
- 600–900 GSM: Plush, hotel-style towels. Highly absorbent and soft, though they take a little longer to dry.
There is no single “best” GSM — it depends on what you value most. If quick drying matters more to you (say, for a humid bathroom with limited ventilation), a mid-range GSM is often more practical than the heaviest towel available.
Beyond GSM: Other Things to Check
- Cotton quality: 100% cotton towels absorb better and last longer than cotton blends.
- Weave: A tight, even weave with minimal loose threads tends to hold up better over time.
- Edge stitching: Reinforced hems reduce fraying after repeated washing.
Caring for Your Towels
Wash new towels before first use to boost absorbency, avoid fabric softener (it coats the fibres and reduces absorbency over time), and tumble dry on low or line dry to keep them fluffy.
